    Game of a generation.

It was most likely 2006 the last time I beat this game via Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence on PS2. Since then, I've played this game on PS Vita, PS3, Xbox 360, PC and PS5 all via the Remastered Collection and the Master Collection Vol. 1 (but never bothered to complete those versions). This truly is the new definitive way to play this game, it looks absolutely fantastic and ran consistently smooth 60 fps at 1440p on my PC. There were a few moments where I really had to jog my memory from those early years (and I still don't remember how I hide in a cardboard box in the back of a truck... I know it's somewhere) but the game must truly be played to experience a masterpiece of any entertainment medium. For every trope that's aged poorly there's a whole load more that show just how groundbreaking this game was at the time (and how well it holds up even today). I can't wait to start New Game + and mop up missing items from my first playthrough.

  • Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza is a fun game but suffers from chapter pacing issues that made it eventually wore out it's welcome. By the time Chapter 2 was finally over, it made me just want to hit the main story to finish the game. It didn't help the fact that I was already "Pirate Legend" by the time that chapter ended so any remaining foes didn't present much of a challenge and the two fighting styles pretty much came down to spamming the same set of moves every fight causing the novelty to wear out. Whilst it's impressive, visually, it feels like a step down from Infinite Wealth, the lighting is so weird that it makes everything look washed out at times. Most of the "new" components of this game involve exploring the ocean between islands and this eventually becomes a laborious chore. Thankfully, the game is short, I sunk a fair bit of time into side content and still wrapped up the main story in 25 hours. Plenty of side content left to do, however...

As the title implies, this is a truly arcade like retro experience. Short game length that requires multiple playthroughs to master. I was able to beat the game on my second playthrough and that was mainly due to the insane ramp up in difficulty in maybe the final 3 levels. These difficulty spikes often feel artificial just like retro games, checkpoints become few and far in between- I didn't necessarily enjoy his change toward the end. Once you understand a few tricky enemy patterns though, it truly becomes much easier. I found the game to have some unresponsive and frustrating moments that heavily relied on you facing a certain directly whilst holding L2 but it just wouldn't register my button presses. (Same goes for a couple of moments it would display that I could press B to grab an enemy and use them as a human shield but pressing B wouldn't do anything except lead to me losing a health point.) Aesthetically, this looks and sounds amazing. I encourage to turn on the brilliant CRT filter to make it really look fantastic.

Resident Evil Requiem absolutely plays like the Resi Greatest Hits album combining what made Resident Evil 7 and 8 so great along with everyone's favourite entry, Resident Evil 4. It's split perfectly between first person horror stealth and third person action, it absolutely ensures everyone is having a good time (and although I didn't play it this way, you can play both first person or third person for both Claire and Leon). My only gripe with the game is that it's level sections are sampler size, often times when I'm ready to leave an area or take on a particular boss, the game moves into new territory and a new location. The environments you do spend the most time in, however, are perfectly enjoyable throughout and there wasn't any sections I found tedious or dreaded playing again in a second playthrough. Playing this on a RTC 5080 with Path Tracing was unbelievable. There were moments I just had to stop and look around the environments because they were so stunningly detailed and lush to look at. The Resident Evil Engine shines again!.

I think this might be my favourite modern game of all time. Endlessly replayable, endlessly fun. I have an absolute blast every time I boot up a campaign, just creating my own soldiers and going through all the range of emotions when they inevitably die.

007 First Light is a fantastic addition to the James Bond gaming franchise, which hasn't had a proper entry since 2012. The Hitman team at IO Interactive does an absolutely fantastic job of telling a narrative-driven James Bond story while also delivering stellar gameplay. The game divides its time between crowd-mingling espionage and solid combat sequences, neither of which outstays its welcome before flowing naturally into something different. Whenever you enter combat, it feels kinetic and natural, and it's incredibly satisfying to take down a room full of bad dudes before dropping a signature Bond one-liner. My Steam playtime clocks in at 18.6 hours, and that includes playing the first two TacSim levels (which comprise of three missions each). I certainly would have dabbled with more, but weirdly, the rest of TacSim doesn't unlock until you finish the main game, so I'll return to that at a later date. I'm unsure whether I'll wait for the recently announced New Game+ before going back to mop up collectibles for the Platinum Trophy (or Steam equivalent). Even if I don't, there's enough variation in the levels to make me want to revisit them and see how else I could have tackled certain objectives (though it's not quite at Hitman levels of replayability). Very happy to have Bond back!
